Hotstick Testing, Repair, & Refurbishment Services

NAIL for PET accredited laboratory testing, visual inspection, and recertification for fiberglass live line tools, telescopic sticks, and shotgun tools.

Insulating hot sticks allow lineworkers to safely operate switches, measure voltages, apply temporary grounds, and replace fuses on energized high-voltage lines. Over time, exposure to moisture, dirt, UV radiation, surface tracking, or structural stress can breach the fiberglass shell, posing severe electrical shock hazards.

Burlington Safety Laboratory provides comprehensive, ASTM-compliant dielectric testing and inspection for all fiberglass tools across our state-of-the-art testing facilities in New Jersey and California. With our standard 2-week turnaround time (and expedited services available), we ensure your live line tools remain electrically safe and fully compliant.

Our Step-by-Step Dielectric Testing Process for Hotsticks

Every fiberglass hot stick submitted to Burlington Safety Laboratory undergoes a multi-stage electrical and physical evaluation:

Step 1: Preparatory Cleaning & Decontamination

Hot sticks are thoroughly cleaned using specialized, solvent-free industrial cleaners approved for fiberglass safety tools. This process removes road film, grease, silicone residues, metal particles, and environmental contaminants that create conductive tracking paths on the tool’s surface.

Step 2: Surface Drying

Following cleaning, tools undergo controlled warm-air drying to remove all surface moisture prior to high-voltage dielectric evaluation.

Step 3: High-Voltage Wet/Dry Dielectric Testing

Hot sticks are mounted on specialized test benches and subjected to high-voltage AC dielectric testing in accordance with ASTM F711 standards (typically 100kV per foot for wet/dry dielectric evaluation). Precision sensors monitor current leakage along the length of the tool. Any stick displaying excessive leakage current or internal dielectric breakdown is flagged immediately.

Step 4: Re-Drying Process

After completing electrical tests, tools undergo a final drying cycle to prepare the fiberglass surface for physical and mechanical inspection.

Step 5: Visual Inspection & Structural Integrity Check

Skilled technicians inspect the tool from end-to-end under bright illumination. Technicians verify mechanical operation (latches, springs, head mechanisms) and check for:

  • Fiber blooming, surface cracking, deep gouges, or fractures
  • UV degradation, delamination, or loss of glossy protective finish
  • Damaged, bent, or loose metal operating heads, ferrules, and locking pins

Step 6: Serialized Stamping & Documentation

Hot sticks passing dielectric and visual testing are stamped in durable ink or affixed with weather-resistant labels detailing the unique serial number, test voltage, and test completion date for complete audit traceability.

Step 7: Protective Sleeving & Packaging

Certified hot sticks are wrapped or enclosed in protective plastic sleeving to guard against surface scratches, moisture, and contamination during transport.

Step 8: Boxing & Labeling

Tools are packaged in heavy-duty shipping containers or crates, sealed with Burlington Safety tape, and tagged with detailed tracking information.

Step 9: Shipping or Pickup

Finished orders are shipped via UPS/freight or made available for customer pickup at one of our regional facilities (Burlington, NJ; Pleasanton, CA; Westminster, CA).

Hotstick Field Care & Inspection (In the Field Guidelines)

Proper daily maintenance protects the fiberglass finish and maintains electrical insulation properties between required 2-year laboratory tests:

ALWAYS:

  • Wipe down hot sticks with an approved silicone-treated cloth before each use.
  • Visually inspect for deep scratches, cracks, broken latches, or loose fittings daily.
  • Store hot sticks in clean, dry, moisture-resistant vinyl bags or hard transport cases.
  • Keep tools clean, dry, and free from hydraulic oils, grease, and chemicals.

NEVER:

  • Never lay hot sticks directly on bare ground, wet grass, or abrasive surfaces.
  • Never use a hot stick showing signs of fiberglass blooming, deep gouges, or cracks.
  • Never store hot sticks wet or leave them exposed to direct sunlight in open trucks.
  • Never use unapproved solvents or harsh abrasives to clean fiberglass surfaces.

Immediate Replacement & Repair for Failed Hotsticks

If a hot stick fails dielectric testing or shows physical damage, it cannot return to service without repair or replacement.

Burlington Safety Laboratory offers full support for failed live line tools:

  • Replacement Parts & Heads: Replacement hooks, operating heads, end caps, and latches.
  • New Tool Inventory: Immediate shipment of new ASTM F711 certified hot sticks (shotgun, telescopic, switch, and measuring sticks) from top manufacturers to keep your operations running without delay.
