Lineman’s Rubber Blanket Dielectric Testing Services

NAIL for PET accredited laboratory testing, visual inspection, and recertification for rubber insulating blankets (Class 0 – Class 4).

Rubber insulating blankets provide essential phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground protection for utility workers and electricians working near energized conductors, apparatus, or structural elements. Because blankets are routinely draped, clamped, and handled in rugged field conditions, regular laboratory testing is critical to verify their dielectric strength and physical integrity.

Burlington Safety Laboratory offers complete, ASTM-compliant testing services for electrical insulating blankets across our state-of-the-art testing facilities in New Jersey and California. With our standard 2-week turnaround time (and expedited options available), we keep your utility crews, line contractors, and industrial safety teams fully compliant and protected.

Our Step-by-Step Dielectric Testing Process for Insulating Safety Blankets

Every insulating blanket submitted to Burlington Safety Laboratory passes through a rigorous quality assurance workflow:

Step 1: Preparatory Cleaning & Washing

Blankets undergo thorough washing using mild detergents to remove dirt, grease, oils, chemicals, and road grime that can compromise dielectric properties. Old test stamps and ink markings are removed to ensure a clean surface for evaluation and restamping.

Step 2: Machine Drying

Following the washing phase, blankets are placed in warm-air drying equipment to eliminate surface moisture prior to high-voltage electrical testing.

Step 3: Dielectric High-Voltage Testing

Blankets are positioned on precision flat-bed testing electrodes and subjected to high-voltage dielectric testing in strict adherence to ASTM standards. Our advanced equipment simultaneously evaluates electrical insulation properties and measures leakage current across all blanket classes (Class 0 through Class 4). Any detected electrical breakdown or current leakage beyond allowed limits is automatically flagged.

Step 4: Re-Drying Process

After dielectric testing, blankets undergo a secondary drying pass to prepare the rubber surface for physical visual inspection.

Step 5: Visual Inspection & Physical Evaluation

Skilled technicians inspect every square inch of the blanket under proper lighting and tension. Technicians manually roll and flex both sides of the blanket to detect physical defects, including:

  • Corona cutting, ozone cracking, and UV damage
  • Cuts, nicks, punctures, tears, and scratches
  • Foreign material inclusion, chemical attack, or surface deep depressions

Step 6: Serialized Stamping

Blankets passing dielectric and visual inspections are stamped in durable ink with a unique serial number, proof test voltage, maximum use voltage, and test date to ensure complete accountability and audit traceability.

Step 7: Packaging & Protection

Certified blankets are carefully rolled or stored flat using protective wrap to guard against dust, ozone, and mechanical abrasion during handling.

Step 8: Boxing & Labeling

Blankets are packaged into sturdy cartons and sealed with Burlington Safety tape. Each box is labeled with individualized stickers containing serial numbers, test dates, and relevant blanket specifications.

Step 9: Shipping or Pickup

Sealed orders are dispatched via UPS or made available for customer pickup at one of our regional facilities (Burlington, NJ; Pleasanton, CA; Westminster, CA).

Safety Blanket Field Care & Inspection (In the Field Guidelines)

Proper daily handling extends the service life of rubber insulating blankets and ensures maximum safety between required annual laboratory tests:

ALWAYS:

  • Visually inspect and roll-test blankets for punctures or cuts before each use.
  • Use approved blanket canisters, roll-up covers, or flat storage containers.
  • Clean blankets with mild soap and water, allowing them to air dry completely.
  • Use non-damaging blanket pins or straps to secure blankets in position.

NEVER:

  • Never use a blanket showing ozone cracks, deep cuts, or chemical damage.
  • Never fold, crease, or compress rubber blankets during storage or transport.
  • Never allow blankets to contact petroleum, gasoline, oils, or strong solvents.
  • Never use sharp wire, nails, or unapproved clamps to secure blankets.

Immediate Replacement for Failed Blankets

If a blanket fails dielectric testing or physical inspection, safety standards dictate that it must be retired immediately.

Burlington Safety Laboratory carries a complete inventory of new, freshly tested Class 0 through Class 4 insulating blankets (solid, slotted, eyelet, and roll blanketing) from top manufacturers. We can instantly replace rejected units from stock to prevent operational delays on your job site.
